Immunotherapies
Our expertise in understanding the host immune system and inflammatory processes has already contributed to new approaches to treat and prevent inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, systemic lupus, multiple sclerosis and allergic diseases. Through close examination of human immune responses in health and disease we will identify further novel mechanisms of disease and targets for therapy. This expertise in the immune response holds enormous promise when combined with current strengths in vaccinology and virology to develop new approaches that harness the power of the immune system in new preventative and immunotherapeutic approaches to combatting infection, chronic inflammatory diseases and cancer. Inflammation and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel diseases place a huge burden on society and the health care system. Our work in these areas is focussed on ways to not just manage the symptoms of disease but to re-direct the immune response leading to an effective resolution of the disease process by redirecting the immune system
